A poster inspired but the hiking trail, mcafee’s knob near blacksburg, va.
Meaning
I was tasked with creating a poster based on a place. I chose one of the hiking trails near Virginia Tech, Mcafee’s Knob. The first step of this project was going to the location and finding out what was unique about it. I found out that the best part of this hike is the great view that you see at the top. At the top you can see a 270 degree view of the surrounding mountains. The 270 degree view, became the main focus for my poster design. All of the circles and angle are 270 degrees. I created flat vector images to go along with the angles. The main image is of the rock formation you are on at the top of the hike.
technique & typography
This poster had a three color restriction to it. I wanted colors that contrasted with one another so I chose the coral and the navy blue. I also wanted a color that reference back to the rock formations with the creamy grey color. I wanted the smaller type to relate to the image so I adjusted the rags so it looked like the rock formation of the hike.
Reflection
I enjoyed making a poster about something that I was able to visit and experience myself. A main part of the project was getting the viewer to get an understanding and feeling of the place without being there. Since that wonderful view at the top was such an amazing end to the upward hike, I knew that was what needed to be emphasized.
Because this was based on Type Hike and it was going to be displayed and printed, there were restriction on the number of colors as well as what color we could select. I think without those restrictions, I would have added more depth to some of the illustrations.
