AR | Poster Design | Typography
Storms is an Augmented reality poster about anxiety.
Meaning
This project involved creating a resonance poster. The interpretation could be literally relating to the word resonance or just something that relates to us. I decided to look at quotes about mental illness. I know many have suffered from anxiety including myself and wanted a poster to shed light on that. The quote found was : “Anxiety was born in the same moment as mankind, and since we will never be able to master it, we will have to learn to live with it - just as we have learned to live with storms”. The quote led me to the storm imagery used throughout the poster as well as the animation.
technique & typography
This poster allowed me to use some hands-on techniques instead of creating everything digitally. I printed out the word “Isolation” and scanned it multiple times, moving the paper while it was scanned. This created the unique typography at the top of the poster. Torn paper was also scanned and used to create transition from paper to the storm scene. For the rest of the typography throughout the poster, I wanted it to curve with the torn paper. I moved some of the characters off of the baseline so it wasn’t as perfect. I didn’t want the type to be perfect to relate back to the meaning of the poster. Anxiety and mental illness can make life hard on the people it affects and I wanted to show that with the imperfectness of the type.
Animation
This poster has an augmented reality component to it. If you download the “Artivive” app, you can point your phone at the poster and see the animation. The animation shows the storm moving in the background and shows the poster flashing as if there were actual lightning in the area.
Reflection
This was the first experience I had with AR. I enjoyed upgrading this project to have a motion feature. I also liked being able to experiment with different scanning techniques.
During my time at Virginia Tech I often had trouble with making the typography in my project more unique. Scanning the words and breaking the quote into different sections helped me do this in this poster. I am the most excited about the typography in the poster. It was different from what I usually create and I am happy to have created something unique.
